Wow, what a loaded question.  And my answer here really puts
everything into perspective for you.  I’d say this is THE
most important message you’ll read about this entire topic.

The actual VALUE of The “10K Day” Coaching and Mastermind Program depends on several factors.  Here they are, in the form of questions you’ll want to ask yourself, so you can arrive at a value for
your practice.  Clearly, this program’s value is subjective, yet significant for all!

Only you can answer those questions, but my guess is that your
answers are of significant substance!  And imagine if you were
to address and improve ALL of the aspects of your practice listed
above.  What would that be worth?

Add it up.
$88,000?  $137,000?  $264,000 or more?
Go ahead…do the math.
It’s FUN to do that kind of math!

Now please understand that whatever your projected increases in
collections come out to be, they are ANNUAL increases.  Yes,

“What’s this ‘10K Day’ program all about, anyway?”
(Get ready…this one’s long but VERY detailed!)

That seems to be the question on the minds of several doctors
who have been asking about it.  Here I’m going to address the
basics of the program so you can gain a better understanding of
how it can benefit those doctors and practices who are involved.

A couple months ago I was visiting with Dr. Chris Port, a very
successful dentist in my hometown of Asheville, NC.  I’ve only
known Dr. Port for about 7 years, but we’ve gotten to be great
friends…and he’s also a Dental Insiders Alliance member as
well as a full-day coaching client.

We were both sharing our practice statistics with each other,
and I commented that I had more “10K Days” — consisting of
at least $10,000 or more in COLLECTIONS — in the fourth quarter
of 2008 than ever before, by a wide margin.  And the first quarter
of 2009 was yielding similar results.

Dr. Port said: “You know Chris, most doctors would love to have
just ONE “10K Day”…many have never had one!”  He’s right.  Then
he said: “You should bottle up ALL your content and deliver it
in a Coaching program for dentists who want MORE “10K Days”…
or even their first one (of many to come).”

Now, those of you who have gotten to know me realize that I love
to share my thoughts, ideas, and strategies with dentists…and
I get fired up to motivate and inspire dentists to set their bar
higher than ever before and HIT their lofty goals FAST.

Recently I had decided that I would launch a new, innovative
Coaching AND Mastermind program for dentists, because I believe

The average daily collections numbers in private North American
dental practices range from $3000-4500, depending upon whom you
ask.  To me that’s NOT OK!  I realize that your personal numbers
may be considerably higher (some even MORE than $10K…I’ll address
that elite group in a minute).  But very few have an average
daily goal of “$10K a day”.  Hence the name.

The purpose of The “10K Day” Coaching and Mastermind Program is
to help you set YOUR daily bar at a MINIMUM of $10K in collections,
and give you ALL the tools and guidance necessary to make days
like this a REALITY.

Now, can I promise that you’ll hit a 10K Day every day?  Of course
not.  In fact, it would be inappropriate for me to blindly make

that I will give you more than enough resources in this program

I will customize each Coaching Day for each participating doctor,
including modules on Business Systems, Marketing, Statistics Review,
Communications, Long-Range “Big Picture” Strategies, Team Building
& Leadership, Clinical Service Offerings, and “Buried Treasure”.

This intense day will contain no meaningless “fluff”.  No sappy,
time wasting “mission statements” or anything like that…we won’t
have time for such puffery.  Instead, we’ll develop your own
personal “Dental Success Blueprint”, which you can literally take
home with you and IMPLEMENT with your entire team!

Component #2: THREE annual 2-Day Mastermind Meetings with the entire
“10K Day” Mastermind Group!  These meetings, led and facilitated
personally by me, will prove to be BREAKTHROUGH EVENTS for the
16 participating doctors who are accepted into the program.

Held in beautiful Charlotte, NC at the prestigious Charlotte
Country Club (not some stale hotel meeting room), each Mastermind
Meeting will afford EVERY group member the opportunity to have
30-60 minutes of “Hot Seat” time focused purely on his/her practice.
We’ll harness the collective power of the entire group to help
solve problems and initiate new strategies for growth and success.
(Note: Charlotte is a HUB airport, with hundreds of non-stop flights.)

As your group leader I will be presenting completely NEW CONTENT
to the group at each Mastermind Meeting, based on my experiences
and resources from inside and outside of the dental profession.
You’ll be privy to INSIDE INFORMATION that I reserve only for
this high-level group.

Occasionally I will also bring in GUEST EXPERTS, again from either
inside or outside the dental industry.  Keep in mind that most of
the BIG business breakthroughs I’ve experienced in my career were
developed from what I learned from NON-dental sources!  These will
not be your “typical” guest speakers.  All will bring UNIQUE

Component #3: 12 Monthly 30-Minute Coaching Calls!  I will
personally conduct these calls with YOU AND YOUR TEAM, during
which we will focus on KEY ELEMENTS that make the biggest difference
in your own practice.  Topic selection will be based on YOUR needs
and goals…this is not “cookie cutter” stuff.

Team involvement is CRITICAL to the implementation of new systems
and strategies.  These Coaching Calls will help your team stay on
track, and accountable for your progress.  Questions will be
answered, problems solved, roadblocks conquered.  Also, successes
will be celebrated, and goals will be reset to higher levels!

Component #4: Up To 4 “Wild Card” Coaching Calls!  These on-demand
calls with me will be scheduled on an “as needed” basis.  I
included this component to address unplanned events and changes
that can pop up in any business.  During each 12-month membership
cycle you’ll have up to 4 opportunities to get me on the phone
and discuss whatever issues you’re facing at the moment.  Great
for sudden unexpected needs!

Component #5: [Optional] Additional “a la carte” Coaching Days
and 1/2 Days!  I’ll have a limited number of days set aside for
“10K Day” Coaching and Mastermind Members to schedule either
half-day or full-day coaching sessions with me.  This feature
is for those doctors who want or need more coaching assistance.
While there are additional fees for this service (the rest are
included), some will find the additional time to have IMMENSE VALUE.

Most of these extra Coaching Days will be scheduled around existing
Mastermind Meetings and Coaching Days, for the convenience of the

By recording the audio of each event, you’ll be sure to catch

PS: Why just 16 doctors?  It’s actually simple to explain.  First,
I have a very limited number of days I can commit to Coaching.
Second, the Mastermind Meeting format can only accommodate up
to 16 doctors during a 2-day meeting, for every doctor to get
their own “Hot Seat” time.  And believe me, two days is enough!
There are so many big ideas flying around at these meetings that
any more would be overwhelming.  No false scarcity here…just
a firm limit of 16 for best results.

Which is better: Coaching or Mastermind?

Plus…an announcement for you!

Last time I mentioned that I would address the above question,
which has been asked of me by several doctors since I started
this thread about Coaching and Mastermind groups. I
meant to get this out to you earlier, but my family kept me
booked with some planned (and unplanned!) birthday weekend
activities…and Monday was CRAZY busy.

Yes, my “3rd Annual 39th Birthday” was Sunday, and we had
the whole weekend packed with Kenan’s soccer practice and games
(I’m his coach), Reid’s T-ball pictures and games, golf with
my dad, family birthday dinners, etc…beginning THURSDAY night.
I’m still tired, and it’s Monday night…and we’re ALL (family and
team) going to Destin for Woody Oakes’ Spring Seminar on
Wednesday, where I’m speaking not once but TWICE…WHEW!

Anyway, back to the question. “So what should I be looking for,”
asked one doctor. “A Coaching program or Mastermind program?”
Although I could spend hours going on and on about each, I’ll
try to break it down pretty thoroughly but quickly here.

First, Coaching. These programs tend to be rather short term in
nature, often lasting one or two years in dentistry, with many
variations. There are in-office and out-of-office versions,
either involving primarily the doctor or with team heavily
involved.

Coaching more frequently involves an individual, per-practice
model, meaning there is more emphasis on one dental practice
or partnership. While group Coaching does exist, it must be
primarily standardized when presented in the group model…
which can have limitations.

Benefits of Coaching include the personal attention given to
the client practice, and the ability to customize the program
for each individual office. Coaching without customization should
NOT be considered, as all practices have different nuances that
require variations in protocols.

What’s usually missing from Coaching programs, however, is the
involvement and participation of other practices who are going
through similar circumstances and share common goals. That’s
where the Mastermind group comes in STRONG.

Mastermind groups bring the power of SYNERGY, which I described
in detail last time. In the Mastermind group, both diversity
and commonalities should be balanced so each member can get
different perspectives and angles on the same issues. The
collective thought processes, under careful guidance of a solid
leader, bring big breakthroughs that can literally transform a
practice, and the lives connected to that practice.

Another significant benefit of Mastermind groups is CONTINUITY.
Unlike most coaching programs that “teach and set free”, the
Mastermind group can continue perpetually. As you might
imagine, the tendency is for each group to get stronger and
stronger over time. Some members occasionally opt out after
some time, while new members join off the waiting list as slots
come open, albeit rarely. The best Mastermind groups stay largely
in tact for many years.

Masterminds are usually best carried out with only the business
leaders present, and perhaps one primary team member. These are
more strategic leadership meetings, usually held 2-4 times
per year. In between, implementation takes place…and it had
better, because each member of the Mastermind is held ACCOUNTABLE
by the group. That accountability leads to BIG growth.

Pure Mastermind groups, however, don’t often include personalized
coaching. That’s the primary limitation. Sure, you do get the
personal benefits of your own “hot-seat” hour or so, when the
entire group is focused on you and your business. And I can
personally attest that EVERY time I get BIG takeaways from OTHER
members’ hot seat hours. But other than that, there’s little
to no one-on-one time with the leader/coach.

Lastly, it can often be quite difficult to assemble a like-minded
group of business leaders, especially on a local level. Just
recently another doctor emailed me about this very thing. He tried
to form a local group with other entrepreneurial friends, and
as he put it: “the reception was lukewarm at best”. Unless there’s
a rather large group of entrepreneurial business leaders from which
to form a much smaller Mastermind group, forming such a group is
a huge challenge.

So, WHICH IS BETTER??

Can you FEEL my answer??

You got it……..BOTH!

Yes, both Coaching AND Masterminding in my opinion are the way to
go. Problem is, virtually all coaches and consultants out there
in dentistry either have one or the other. Most have a “Coaching”
program, or a “Consulting” program, or a “Mastermind group”. But
none that I know of have taken the best elements of both and
put them together into one solid Coaching AND Masterminding Program.

“Coaching and Masterminding vs. Tax Day Tea Parties”

I know, I know…today is TAX DAY.  This is perhaps the most hated
and dreaded day of the year in the U.S. for many.  On top of
that, this particular tax day is especially interesting.  All
across America, hundreds of thousands of people will gather to
protest our government’s reckless deficit spending programs,
and subsequent imminent universal tax hikes (it’s not just
a matter of “if”, but “when”).

Will you be attending one of these “Tea Parties”, named in
memory of the famous Boston Tea Party symbolizing ‘taxation
without representation’?  I hope not…but not for the reasons
you may expect!  If it were not for my reasoning below, I’d
be there myself.

Hey, I’m all for letting government know how you feel about
their behavior.  Regardless of which side of the political aisle
you’re on, you must be wondering what the heck is going on
in Washington.  But what is the BEST way for you to react?

BY FAR, the most sensible and effective way for you to make
tax day a non-event…and make EVERY day more enjoyable…is
to spend your available time doing everything you can to
maximize your productivity, and thus your income!  In short:

OUTPRODUCE your tax liability!

I abhor big tax bills like everyone else.  And if you’re cranking
out serious revenue numbers, your tax bill will be big even after
all legal deductions have been maximized.  So will your bank
account!  That’s the point.

But how do you break through BARRIERS that have been keeping
you from hitting new, record levels of productivity and profit?
Here’s a hint: you can’t do it alone!

I’ve found that when I try to take everything on by myself, my
results may be good, or even really good, which in fact can be
dangerous.  Why?  Because they’re not GREAT.

However, when I harness the power of a great mentor/coach that
can help lead me through “the wilderness areas” of my business
with which I’m less familiar, my results improve from good to
GREAT to OFF THE CHARTS.

Only an insightful business coach can have the “outside eyes”
you need to help you experience big breakthroughs in your
practice.  From uncovering hidden profits lying dormant within
your walls, to discovering opportunities outside it, to exposing
internal problems that inhibit growth, the right coach can
help you and your practice in ways no one else can.  I call it
“UNLEASHING WEALTH”!

The wealth has been there all along, ready for the taking.  It
just needs to be untied and “let go” into your hands.  That’s what
the right mentor/coach can do for you.

Similarly, you must surround yourself with like-minded peers
who want the same results for their businesses just as much
as you want results for yours.  People who are savvy DOERS that
want to help just as much as they want to be helped.  Hence
the power of the Mastermind, which I’ll explore more tomorrow.

I’m currently involved with one coach/mentor and two separate
mastermind groups.  Each requires significant investment.
Each is worth MULTIPLES MORE!  Those who are willing to commit
to coaching and mastermind arrangements routinely outperform
those who try to “go it alone” by a wide margin.  I’ve experienced
this phenomenon firsthand.  There’s no reason why you shouldn’t
experience it yourself!

Finding the holes in your bucket! But first…

Despite all the bad news and more bad news out there today,
this is a wonderful time of year, for two reasons.

First, it’s starting to get warmer here in Charlotte, even
though we’re in for about a week of chilly rainy weather. I’ll
probably have to cancel Kenan’s soccer practice and 1st game
this weekend…but I can smell the warm weather coming.

Second, it’s “March Madness” time…college basketball
tournaments…oh yeah! Being a Univ. of North Carolina double
alumnus and lifelong Tar Heel fan, I’m hopeful that the Heels
can bring home another championship. I realize that you may
not be a college basketball fan…and/or you can’t stand UNC…
but that’s fine with me. Take from it what you will and enjoy
the tourney if it’s your thing. Regardless of outcome (except
of course if Duke wins), I always appreciate the competition.

OK, back to finding the holes in your bucket. What I’m talking
about is the concept of how you LOSE patients. New patients,
existing patients… any patients who were once yours but now
have gone away. Note that I said gone AWAY… not necessarily
to another dentist!

What processes, protocols, or lack thereof in your practice
cause potential or active patients to not want to return.
Or, what is it that makes them so indifferent about your practice
that they aren’t motivated to come back. When patients don’t
stay attached regularly to your practice, it could be either
or both of the above.

Now you may be saying, “Dadgummit Chris, I thought you were
going to show me how to BUILD my practice, how to add more
new patients, how to get more referrals, etc. etc. etc.”
Well, you know I do that. But the thing is,

If You’re Pouring Patients Into A Bucket Full Of Holes,
You’re Gonna Have A Leaky Mess On Your Hands!

And, when you reach into that bucket, there’s not going
to be nearly as much as you thought there would be inside.
Finding, and then plugging, the holes in your bucket is
actually one of THE keys to growing your practice.

In the interest of brevity, let’s look at a list of what
could be either keeping patients away, or failing to inspire
them to stay connected. Keep in mind that this is NEVER a
complete list… but these are some of the biggies.

- Failure to strengthen your relationship with patients
- Failure to stay in touch with patients over time
- Lack of a consistent recall system
- Lack of a consistent overdue recall system
- Failure to follow up with new patient leads
- Failure to follow up with unconverted patients
- Poor to mediocre phone closing skills
- Poor to mediocre case closing skills
- Weak verbal skills in ANY aspect of communication
- Weak “customer service”
- Inflexible financial arrangements, or lack of enough options
- Inflexible scheduling protocols

There are certainly more, but I’ll stop there. These are the
things that make your marketing much more expensive… they
KILL your return on investment.

Fix these things, and you can double or triple the effectiveness
of your marketing without spending a dime extra! Plus you’ll
retain more potential referral sources that can drive your
revenues through the roof.

So, while you do certainly want to focus on acquiring more
new patients, you’ll want to make absolutely sure you’re
not pouring them into a leaky bucket full of holes!
